This American teen has seen 3 major terror attacks in 3 years

Among the nine Americans so far reported injured in the Brussels attacks is a young man who was also at the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing.

As reports trickle out of Brussels to loved ones who survived Tuesday's deadly explosions in the Belgian capital, one American's teen story has taken another incredible turn as he's survived his second terror attack.

Mason Wells, 19, of Sandy, Utah, was one of a group of Mormon missionaries who were injured by the explosion at the Brussels airport on Tuesday morning. Wells was at the airport with Richard Norby, 66, and Joseph Empey, 20, as they were dropping off a fourth missionary, Fanny Rachel Clain, of Montelimar, France, who was on her way to an assignment in Cleveland.

Chris Lambson, a family friend of Wells, told the Associated Press the trio was very close to the blast, which tore Wells' Achilles tendon. He had surgery and was treated for a gash on his head along with second- and third-degree burns to the right side of his body and face.

"He should make a 100% recovery," Lambson said.

But, for Wells, this marked a second brush with terrorism. In 2013, he was with his father a block away from the Boston Marathon finish line when a pair of bombs exploded, killing three people and injuring scores more. The pair had been waiting for Wells' mother, Kymberly, to finish running the race.

And, according to Wells' parents, the young man was in France as part of his mission when last November's terror attacks unfolded in Paris.

Speaking to ABC News, Kymberly Wells said, "Mason has always assured us that he is safe and careful. I told him first and foremost always be aware of your surroundings, please be very careful when you’re traveling be very observant to people around you."

His father, Chad Wells, added, "I think the Boston experience helped him to stay calm."

The other missionaries were also hospitalized for their injuries. Empey was doing well after being treated for second-degree burns to his hands, face and head, his parents, Court and Amber Empey said in a statement. He also had surgery for shrapnel injuries to his legs.

"We have been in touch with him and he is grateful and in good spirits," the statement said. "This has been a difficult day for our family, and our hearts are broken for those injured or killed by the attacks in Belgium."

The Deseret News reports Norby suffered burns to his face and legs. Clain was in a different part of the airport at the time of the explosion and she was hospitalized with minor burns and cuts.

In the multiple attacks on the airport and a metro station at least 31 people were killed, with hundreds of people injured. At least six other Americans were injured including a U.S. Air Force officer, his wife, and four children who were all hurt in the blast at the airport. U.S. officials have not identified the officer or his family.

In addition to those injured, Oakland University (Michigan) basketball coach Greg Kampe tweeted that a former OU player, Seb Bellin, was hurt in the airport explosion.

While Bellin is a Belgian national, according to the Washington Post, he has a home in Michigan where his wife and two children live while he travels between Michigan and Europe.

Kampe told the Post that he had undergone surgery to remove shrapnel from his legs and would likely require a second surgery.
