The Game Boy was a fantastic creation, and Analogue is bringing it back with it the Analogue Pocket, an upcoming mobile console that plays Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance games.

While it looks like a Game Boy Pocket from 1996, the Analogue Pocket has an HD LCD screen and a rechargeable battery, which is already so much better than Nintendo's early mobile consoles. Not only that, it has a built in synthesizer and sequencer for creating music, and it can be docked to a TV and connect to controllers for a big screen experience.

It's kind of like a Game Boy and a Nintendo Switch had a musical little baby.

Oh, and with some cartridge adapters, the Pocket can play games for other mobile consoles too, including the Game Gear and Atari Lynx.

This isn't like Nintendo's own throwback Classic consoles that come loaded with NES and SNES games. The Analogue Pocket uses its own technology, not emulation, to play actual old cartridges, so it's a BYOG (bring your own games) situation.

It looks like a fantastic little console with a beautiful screen — 10 times the resolution of the original Game Boy — that will bring out the best visuals possible on these old mobile games. If it's as good as any of Analogue's other consoles, like the Mega Sg and the Super Nt, then it will perhaps stand as one of the best mobile console releases in recent memory.

The addition of the synthesizer and sequencer that makes it a little audio workstation is just icing on the cake and is a fun nod to the Game Boy's use in chiptune music, a genre that relies on the sound chips from old video game consoles.

The Analogue Pocket is expected to release in 2020 for $199.99, which does not include the dock. The price of the dock has not been revealed yet.
