What we learned from the iPad Pro 10.5 teardown

It's what's inside that counts.

You can now buy Apple's new iPad Pro 10.5, which is exactly what the gadget experts at iFixit did so they could tear the sucker down. The damage was done to give us a clue as to what sets it apart from its closest ancestor, the 9.7-inch iPad Pro.

The physical changes start on the outside. Besides just being bigger, the new Pro puts its microphone hole in a new spot. The 9.7-inch Pro had it situated next to the rear-facing camera while the 10.5-inch Pro plopped it down next to the selfie camera. This move might be to favor FaceTime (whose camera got an upgrade with the new model).

The 10-inch Pro's display cables run down the center of the machine, rather than along the sides where they were close to the corners. That could potentially mean any owner who drops their iPad Pro may save a lot of time and money on repairs.

Last, but certainly not least, is the updated battery. The new Pro houses a 30.8 watt-hour battery, up from its 27.91 watt-hour counterpart in the 9.7-inch model. The larger capacity is expected, and will certainly play a role in one of the most significant technical upgrades, the display's 120Hz refresh rate, AKA ProMotion, which is double what previous iPads were capable of. Apple still rates the iPad Pro at "up to 10 hours," a spec it achieves clearly not just by dynamically changing the refresh rate based on what's on screen, but also with a little extra juice.
