Apple is getting serious about foldables. Not only will it reportedly launch its first foldable phone, the iPhone Fold (official name still pending) this fall, but it's now (also reportedly) contemplating launching another foldable device, a clamshell-style phone which might or might not be called iPhone Flip.

The news comes via Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, who says the device would be pretty much what you'd expect — a square phone not entirely unlike a Motorola Razr or a Samsung Flip.

Don't get too excited yet, though. While the wider iPhone Fold sounds like a certainty, given the amount of reports we've seen about it, the iPhone Flip is merely being contemplated right now and is "far from guaranteed to reach the market."

Gurman did not offer any further details about the device. The important part, he says, is that Apple is betting that its iPhone Fold would be successful enough that people would want to buy other Apple foldables, in different shapes and sizes. A larger, book-style foldable phone (larger than the iPhone Fold) could also come at a later stage.

In other words, we could have an entire ecosystem of Apple foldable devices in a matter of years.

None of this is even close to official, and Apple is yet to launch its first foldable device of any kind. A very pocketable, clamshell iPhone does sound very nice, especially for those who are missing the iPhone mini.
