Apple TV 4K replaces the worst remote of all time with something kinda normal

Our long national nightmare is over: There's a new Apple TV remote.

At its spring event on Tuesday, Apple revealed a new version of its Apple TV streaming hardware, which somehow hadn't been updated since 2017. The new Apple TV is still a 4K-ready streaming box like its predecessor, but it comes with a new, more traditionally button-centric remote instead of the touch-sensitive catastrophe that was the previous version. It has a traditional directional pad for buttoning through menus, but it's also touch-sensitive for those who preferred the old way. You can also dial the ring around the directional pad in a circular fashion for old school, iPod-style fast forwarding and rewinding.

Aside from that, Apple's A12 Bionic chip is powering the new Apple TV 4K. The most noteworthy performance improvement to come from this is the addition of HDR high-frame-rate viewing, either from streaming services or directly from a phone through AirPlay. There's also a nifty-looking feature where you can adjust your TV's settings for a better picture by aiming your phone at the screen, at which point the Apple TV will use the image to come up with optimal settings.

This updated Apple TV 4K will start at $179.99 for a 32GB model and $199.99 for a 64GB model on April 30. You can also get the older Apple TV 4K model with a new remote for $149.99.
