Can we believe him, though?

Warning: Contains spoilers for Game of Thrones season 3, episode 6 (and maybe beyond).

LONDON -- Remember the boy who cried wolf? Well, this whole trend of Game of Thrones actors casually confirming deaths in interviews is sort of getting a bit like that -- in more ways than one, on this occasion.

Art Parkinson (a.k.a. the long-lost Rickon Stark) spoke to the Huffington Post recently about his re-appearance in episode three -- and he had something to say that many Shaggydog conspiracy theorists will not want to hear.

"Yeah, I'd say so," said Parkinson, when asked if the headless direwolf dumped unceremoniously on a table in Winterfell was the real deal.

"It was a little bit disappointing because, you know, looking at the dogs we had on set... and that you'd never really get to hang out with them again. When I read that Shaggydog was dead, I was definitely a little upset."

On the surface, this bodes very badly for the theory that the Umbers are actually on the same side as the Starks. Surely if SmallJon was trying to trick Ramsay, he wouldn't have actually killed Rickon's direwolf?

When Parkinson was asked about the possibility that the Umbers were really plotting against the Boltons, though, his answer was expectedly vague.

"Well, you know, the show is so full of twists and turns, so it is possible, but it would be disappointing if Jon Umber did really betray us," he said.

Hmm.

The thing is -- jumping back to the whole boy who cried wolf thing -- we can't really trust the show's actors any more, can we? They spent 10 months lying to us about Jon Snow, and although their motives were understandable it does make it sort of hard to believe everything they say now in interviews.

Then again, we should cut Parkinson some slack. He'll almost certainly have been told what he can and can't say to the media, and it's also worth remembering that he won't have read anything beyond the current season -- maybe the Umbers even tricked Rickon into thinking Shaggydog was dead to make their plot against the Boltons more believable, and Shaggy will spring back into action in season seven as part of Nymeria's wild pack?

Maybe. Then again, maybe this is all just wishful thinking.

Maybe it's time to finally let go of Shaggydog after all.
