LONDON -- An art student at Lancaster University has drummed up an impressive amount of confusion among political circles this week.

Lucie Carter invited people to an event at the university with Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn -- but not everything was as it seemed.

The twist was, Jeremy Corbyn wasn't actually going to be there at all -- just a cardboard box with his name on it that was all part of an art project.

Lucie Carter studies fine art at the university.

On Tuesday, Carter sent the following tweet to Corbyn.

Flash-forward to Wednesday morning, and Carter was receiving tweets from an angry Labour MP.

It turns out the MP, Cat Smith, had reported Carter to staff at her uni.

The reaction led to even more debate, with many defending Carter's project.

Following the reaction, Carter defended her project in a series of tweets.

By Thursday, Carter's project was receiving plenty of media attention. In an article published in the Mirror, the event was described as a "bizarre mix-up" that "backfired".

"People turned up at the event, Labour supporters and party members," Cat Smith told the Mirror. "They paid for parking and childcare, time off work, incurred an expense for an event that wasn't happening."

Carter responded to the piece in a Facebook post that she shared on Twitter.

Mashable has reached out to both Lucie Carter and Cat Smith for comment.
