Keeping in step, Asics buys fitness tracking app Runkeeper
Japanese athletic equipment company Asics has acquired sports app maker Runkeeper, the company has announced.
The terms of the deal were not disclosed.
"By putting these two pieces together (digital fitness platform and world class physical products), you can build a new kind of fitness brand that has a deeper, more trusted relationship with consumers and can engage with them in a more personalized way," Jacobs wrote.
The acquisition follows similar moves from other sports manufacturers, including Adidas and Under Armour. In February 2015, Under Armour acquired MyFitnessPal for $475 million, and Adidas bought fitness tracking app Runtastic for $240 million in August.
Runkeeper, which was founded in 2008, is one of the most popular fitness tracking apps. It boasts more than 45 million users, according to the company.
