Assman finds a way around vanity plate rejection with a massive decal

Local government can't stop the Assman.

Local government won't stop the Assman, who can finally display his name with pride.

A Canadian rear end enthusiast in Saskatchewan tried to get a vanity license plate in tribute to his last name, which just happens to be Assman. But Saskatchewan Government Insurance denied David Assman's request because it was “offensive, suggestive or not in good taste,” the Saksatoon Star Phoenix reports.

"Well I’ve never seen the government respond so quick, I sent my appeal in at 1 this afternoon!" David Assman posted on Facebook. "Of course it was denied in 4 hrs with no name attached to it."

But Assman found a backend. Instead, he had "ASSMAN" printed in bold green letters on his white Dodge pickup's tailgate, imitating the look of an actual Saskatchewan plate. The decal also includes four illustrated bolts and the province's slogan, "Land of Living Skies."

Pronounced OSS-men, according to the Saksatoon Star Phoenix, the denial is only the latest in a decades-long struggle for Assman to proudly show off his family name in public. He tried to get a vanity plate made in the 1990s, but it was rejected on grounds of "profanity."

Assman's great-great-grandfather brought the name to Canada from Germany, the Star-Phoenix reports. Derived from the Saxon word "ash," or spear, the Assmans descended from ancient warriors.

The name isn't even that uncommon in Canada's prairie provinces; Ancestry.ca found 23 Assmans living in the country. Other notable Assmans in Saskatchewan include Dick Assman, who gained notoriety for his colorful name and used it to advertise his gas station.

Saskatchewan Government Insurance's list of rejected plates is 85 pages long, the National Post notes, as it denies anything that references sex, drugs, politics, and religion.

In response to Assman's triumph, the agency simply tweeted, "All's well that ends well."

So at least everyone — even Assman — is satisfied with how it all turned out!
