If you're thinking of doing anything silly on the highways, you better hope this car isn't in your rear-view mirror.

Police in Victoria, Australia, have got their hands on a Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S coupé, which will be used for highway patrols and to promote car safety.

Codenamed the "Guardian," the car is worth more than A$200,000 (US$149,064), sports a 430 kilowatt (577 horsepower) engine, which will easily catch up with most vehicles on the highway.

The car also boasts the latest safety features, something that police are keen to promote.

"Death and serious injuries on Victorian roads could be reduced by a third overnight if everyone was driving the safest cars they can afford," Assistant Commissioner Doug Fryer said in a statement. It's a shame safety this good costs as much as a studio apartment.

Fryer added: "We're not saying that everyone needs to rush out and buy the latest and greatest but we need people to prioritise safety over leather seats and shiny wheels."

The car is on a 12-month loan from Mercedes-Benz, which means taxpayers won't need to pay a cent for the vehicle. It'll be first on display at the 2016 Formula One Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne for the public to catch a glimpse.

But if you do find yourself in the back of one of these, at least the plush heated leather seats in the rear might provide some comfort back to the station.
