'Avengers: Endgame' ticket sales threaten to break the internet
Updated 4:30 p.m. EST with official statistics from Fandango.
Within an hour of Avengers: Endgame tickets going on sale, the sheer demand for tickets took its toll on Fandango, AMC, and the Marvel fandom at large. The AMC website was temporarily down, and Fandango put users on pause to handle traffic in the meantime.
Fandango reported later in the day that Avengers: Endgame broke the site's first day presale record, beating the previous record held by Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
This kind of ticket demand isn't unexpected — Fandango has created virtual "waiting rooms" for big releases in the past. Because sites like Fandango and Atom deal with multiple theater chains (e.g., the AMC website only handles AMC theaters, etc.), users could have different luck depending on the theater and show time they tried for.
The AMC website was under so much stress that its guest services Twitter (which hasn't posted since February), actually posted a response. Many of the replies to disgruntled users redirected them to Fandango or to the physical ticket counters at local theaters.

“Avengers: Endgame sales have exceeded all expectations ... to become Fandango’s top-selling title in its first 24 hours of sales, and it accomplished that feat in only 6 hours,” Fandango Managing Editor Erik Davis said in a press release. “We’ve never seen anything like this – it’s truly a groundbreaking accomplishment – as fans simply cannot wait to see how this epic saga comes to a close.”

In its darkest moments, the Fandango website no longer had specific wait times, but simply declared the line was paused.
