Everything Tina Fey touches turns to gold, or to an orange-tinged tan beneath a ghastly blonde wig. In The Hollywood Reporter's cover story about SNL and American politics, Lorne Michaels revealed that it was Fey who first floated the idea of her one-time 30 Rock co-star.

"She said, 'Well, the person that should really play [Trump] is Alec'," Michaels told THR. "And I went, 'Yeah!' A light went on."

In the interview with various members of the show's cast and production, Baldwin recalls struggling to find his take on Trump while watching hours of footage of him.

"I watch and watch and I still don't know what I'm going to do," he said, describing how he prepared for the role. "Then I get out and all I remember is, 'Just try to make him unhappy'...my Trump is 'Miserable Trump.' No matter what. He wins, he loses, he's miserable."

Baldwin described the overwhelming fan reaction, which ranges from police officers to food vendors to obvious Trump supporters -- even in the cabinet.

"I'm not going to name names, but a cabinet member walked up to me at a restaurant in Manhattan," he recalled. "...and he goes, 'I gotta tell you something. This thing you're doing is good, it's really good...I'll get fired if anybody quoted me saying this, but that's exactly what he's like when you do it.'"

We believe it.
