Batman: The Killing Joke just landed a very serious rating.

The animated feature, based on the comic originally published in 1988, will be rated R, Entertainment Weekly reports.

The Killing Joke is a grim story about the Joker capturing and torturing Batgirl, and also serves as a deeper dive into the villain's backstory.

The Killing Joke is revered by the fans, particularly for its blunt, often-shocking adult themes and situations, Warner Bros. Animation and Warner Digital Series Sam Register told EW. "We felt it was our responsibility to present our core audience — the comics-loving community — with an animated film that authentically represented the tale they know all too well.”

The voice cast includes Kevin Conroy as Batman, Mark Hamill as the Joker and Tara Strong as Batgirl. It's only the second Batman movie in the DC Universe Original Movie franchise to get an R rating, EW says.

It will be released later this year. Take a look at the trailer below.
