Oh, the BBC -- what a strange and wonderful place it is.

Last night, during BBC News at 10, a technical glitch left seasoned presenter Huw Edwards sitting in silence for four long minutes in the studio.

It was a strange and mesmerising experience, a sort of drop of tranquillity in a stormy ocean that is TV news.

Newsreader Edwards expressed all his British aplomb by sitting still Zen-like, scanning his papers and doodling as the studio cameras continued to roll.

The "Breaking News" logo flashed up a total of 11 times during the show, alternating with some images.

BBC News at Six and Ten editor Paul Royall later said a "technical systems crash" caused the delay:

Obviously, people on Twitter made a few jokes using the #bbcnewsten hashtag:
