Beijing just snatched the title of Billionaire Capital of the World, bumping former leader New York to second place.

According to the Hurun Rich List 2016 released Wednesday, Beijing now has 100 billionaires, adding 32 from last year.

New York isn't far behind, adding four to make 95 billionaires, but that wasn't enough to retain its top spot.

China as a whole already overtook the U.S. last year in October, when it added 242 in the year to hit 596 billionaires. This translates to five new billionaires per week over the course of 2015.

In comparison, the U.S. had 537 billionaires in 2015 by Hurun's count -- a figure roughly corroborated by Forbes, which also tracks the world's wealthy.

Hurun measures the combined net worth of Chinese billionaires at $1.4 trillion -- similar to Australia's GDP. Most of their money comes from real estate, manufacturing and tech.

While China continues to add people to the ranks, the richest individuals in the world remain mostly Americans. Bill Gates is top of the list with a fortune of $80 billion, followed by Warren Buffett.

  5. Carlos Slim Helu (Mexico)

  6. Mark Zuckerberg (U.S.)

  8. David Koch (U.S.)

  9. Charles Koch (U.S.)

  10. Bernard Arnault (France)

  11. Michael Bloomberg (U.S.)

China's richest man, Wang Jianlin, stands at $26 billion. The real estate mogul more than doubled his wealth in 2015, which allowed him to overtake Hong Kong's Li Ka-shing to become the richest Chinese person in the world. His company, Dalian Wanda, is China's largest real estate developer and runs the world's largest movie cinema network.

According to Forbes, Dalian Wanda owns 125 shopping malls and 68 five-star hotels.

Wang's son, Wang Sicong, shot to infamy last year when he showed off pictures of his dog wearing two Apple Watches, and bragged about it on his dog's Weibo account.
