The central western region of NSW Australia plays host to some of the darkest skies in the southern hemisphere, making it an astronomer's playground and perfect for appreciating the jaw dropping beauty of the night sky.

Ensuring full exposure of this natural phenomena, the Central West Astronomical Society established AstroFest to bring together local and international astronomers and enthusiasts to share their love and awe for the heavens.

The exhibition will remain on display at the CSIRO Parkes Observatory Visitors Centre for the next 12 months while a second exhibition will tour the country starting with the Sydney Observatory on Friday Aug 13.

OVERALL WINNER

Taking out the big kahuna was this piece submitted by Troy Caswell. Of his submission the judges said "This is a very challenging field to photograph, given its enormous extent and very wide dynamic range, with the very bright Orion nebula and the delicately structured faint arc of Barnard's Loop. These issues are beautifully handled here and the image is aesthetically well balanced and presented. A worthy winner."
