Beto O'Rourke got asked to prom and declined in a perfectly dorky way

He handled the rom-com moment like a champ.

Beto O'Rourke is married with three kids and also currently running for president. But that didn't stop someone from asking him to prom.

At an Iowa campaign stop on Thursday, one brave high school student channeled her inner rom-com star and asked him to be her date to the dance.

Girl, we get it. Beto's easy on the eyes, he skateboards in Whataburger parking lots, writes public diaries in the form of Medium posts, and was in a punk band. He's a Hot Dad, if you will. But that's just it — he's a dad! Running for president! He cannot be your prom date.

The Democratic candidate declined the invitation, but he did so in a perfectly dorky way.

"Um so it’s OK if you say no, but will you go to prom with me?" 17-year-old Claire Campbell asked, while holding up a homemade "Will you go 2 prom w/me" sign.

"As someone who did not go to prom because no one asked me, I’m really touched," he said. "This means more to me than you know."

It's important to note that at this point in time Beto was also standing on furniture, raised above the crowd, which, as we know from movies and that one episode of The O.C., is the place to be for grand gestures.

"Somebody told me about your sign, so we came up with a counter-proposal," he added, whipping out a manila folder sign of his own that read, "Will you caucus for me?"

Well played, sir.

Unfortunately for O'Rourke, Campbell is unable to caucus for him since she's from South Dakota, not Iowa. She did, however, tell the Des Moines Register that she appreciated the counter-(prom)proposal.

Campbell said she was slightly disappointed in O'Rourke's answer, "because, like, I need a prom date. But his counter offer was pretty good."

Though Campbell still needs a prom date and Beto still needs more people to caucus for him, the story had a happy ending, and the two caught up after his speech.

They might not have Prom, but they'll always have April 4.
