Bill Gates thinks Elon Musk's AI bots working together to beat humans in Dota 2 is a 'huge milestone'

Bill Gates, the Microsoft founder, is a huge fan of Elon Musk's artificial intelligence research company OpenAI.

Musk cofounded the non-profit in 2015 with entrepreneur Sam Altman, and the company received more than $1 billion in funding at its inception. OpenAI's goal is to develop AI tools that benefit humanity, and it has so far mainly done work with technology that teaches itself to reach goals set out by its engineers, such as walking.

Its latest AI benchmark is no different.

The company trained five AI-powered bots to play the online multiplayer battle game Dota 2 together by hyper-accelerating the game and fitting 180 years worth of it in one day. That means the bots received "100 human lifetimes of experience every single day," said OpenAI's chief technology officer Greg Brockman to The Verge.

They were created after OpenAI wanted to beat professional gamers — an OpenAI bot won a global Dota 2 competition last year, but that to them was just a warm up. The company built new bots that played as a team and have the capacity to defeat humans pretty easily.

"This is just one of the many amazing projects I had a chance to see at @OpenAI, where they're working to ensure as many people benefit from AI as possible," Gates replied to his first tweet in a thread. "This is an incredibly important mission, and I'm excited to see more of their work."

As for what this means for the looming human versus robot war remains to be seen. But it seems safe to say this could be a small step toward artificial intelligence becoming an "immortal dictator" as Elon Musk has previously suggested. Welp, it was nice knowing ya!
