Prime Minister Boris Johnson tests positive for coronavirus

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has confirmed he has tested positive for the new coronavirus (COVID-19) after developing "mild symptoms" over the last 24 hours.

In a video, Johnson said he had a temperature and a persistent cough. He is now self-isolating but said he would continue to "lead the government's response" to coronavirus via video-conference.

"On the advice of the chief medical officer, that has come out positive so I am working from home, I'm self-isolating, and that's entirely the right thing to do," said 55-year-old Johnson.

"But be in no doubt that I can continue — thanks to the wizardry of modern technology — to communicate with all my top team to lead the national fight back against coronavirus," he added.

"I want to thank everybody who's involved, above all our amazing NHS staff. It was very moving last night to join in that national clap for the NHS," Johnson added, in reference to the UK's #ClapForOurCarers tribute.

Matt Hancock, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, announced he had also tested positive for coronavirus. He said in a video statement his symptoms are mild and that he is self-isolating at home.

The news of Johnson's diagnosis comes after Prince Charles, heir to the British throne also tested positive for the virus. Prince Charles is currently self-isolating at home in Scotland, following UK government and NHS advice

Earlier this week, Johnson placed the UK under lockdown, issuing a stay-at-home order. Under the new strict measures, people are only permitted to leave their homes for food, health reasons, or work (if it's not possible to be done from home) in an effort to slow the spread of the virus.

"I want to thank you, I want to thank everybody who's working to keep our country going through this epidemic," Johnson added in his video statement.

"We will get through it."
