The appointment of Boris Johnson as Britain's foreign secretary has surprised the nation, with shockwaves felt all over the world.

The former mayor of London, who campaigned for Britain to leave the European Union, is not exactly known for his diplomatic skills. He infamously called U.S. President Barack Obama "part-Kenyan" and described Democratic presidential hopeful Hilary Clinton as a "sadistic nurse in a mental hospital."

So it does not come as a surprise that U.S. State Department spokesman Mark Toner struggled to contain a laugh when he discovered the news during a daily press briefing:

Toner's response to the question over America's relationship with Johnson was somehow more politically correct:

"We’re always going to be able to work with the British, no matter who is occupying the role of foreign secretary because of our deep abiding special relationship with the United Kingdom," he said.

"We congratulate Foreign Secretary Hammond on his new role [Chancellor of the Exchequer] and we look forward to engaging with Boris Johnson as the new foreign secretary."

"This is something that, frankly, goes beyond — a relationship that goes beyond personalities. And it is an absolutely critical period in, certainly England’s history but also in the U.S.-UK relationship, so absolutely we’re committed to working productively going forward.”
