Boris Johnson discharged from hospital following coronavirus care

Boris Johnson has returned home.

After a week battling "persistent" coronavirus symptoms, the British Prime Minister left London's St. Thomas' Hospital on Sunday to continue his recovery at his country house, Chequers. Johnson announced that he tested positive for COVID-19 on March 27, was admitted to the hospital in early April, and spent three nights in the intensive care unit after his symptoms worsened.

"I have seen the personal courage not just of the doctors and nurses but of everyone: the cleaners, the cooks, the health care workers of every description, physios, radiographers, pharmacists, who have kept coming to work, kept putting themselves in harm's way, kept risking this deadly virus," Johnson said in an emotional address. "It is thanks to that courage, that devotion, that duty, and that love that our NHS has been unbeatable."

Johnson went on to thank specific medical professional by name, particularly those who cared for him when "things could have gone either way."

Johnson's fiancée, Carrie Symonds, shared her gratitude as well in a series of tweets thanking the PM's medical team, and saying,"There were times last week that were very dark indeed...Today I’m feeling incredibly lucky."

At the time of Johnson's discharge, the United Kingdom is officially reporting 10,612 coronavirus-related deaths and over 84,000 other confirmed cases. That said, concerns the country may in fact be underreporting the virus's impact have been raised by experts in recent days.
