The first Dota 2 Major of the season started with an upset.

In the first round, 2016 Dota 2 International winners Wings Gaming were knocked out by Evil Geniuses.

The Dota 2 Boston Major main event kicked off Wednesday with the first half of the round-of-16 matches.

Wings Gaming fell to Evil Geniuses in the second match of the day. Normally this would send Wings Gaming to the losers bracket, but this Major is the first to use a single-elimination format.

Evil Geniuses outplayed Wings Gaming in both matches, moving on to Friday's quarterfinals with a 2-0 victory.

Wings Gaming made several poor plays throughout both games, from being caught out alone to making bad item purchases in early game. For the most part, EG dominated the TI6 champions, putting on a lot of pressure in the early game and controlling their lanes.

Wednesday's series was a rematch of the TI6 winners finals, which saw Wings handle EG in an even more lopsided 2-0 series, sending Wings to the grand finals and sending Evil Geniuses to a loss against TI6 second-place finishers Digital Chaos.

In the quarterfinals Friday, Evil Geniuses will go up against CIS dark horse team Virtus.pro, which recently won The Summit 6 in November, defeating Wings Gaming and OG twice on the way to victory.
