Bowie, the koala with striking eyes that set the internet's cold heart ablaze, has been released back into the wild after a few months of rehabilitation.

Bowie caught the world's attention when she was first brought into care after being hit by a car. Her condition, called heterochromia, is the result of a recessive gene inherited from her parents which manifests itself in the peculiar pigmentation in her iris.

Staff at Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital nursed Bowie back to health as she recovered from the trauma over her injuries.

After two months of recovery, Bowie has been returned to the bush in the south east of Queensland where she was discovered.

Richard Jackson of The Australia Zoo Rescue Unit tended to Bowie said "It only took one look at Bowie to realise how special she is. What's even more special though is the fact that she gets to go back out into the wild a healthy koala who can contribute to the declining south east Queensland koala population" Jackson stated.

In a bittersweet statement, Australia Zoo said that moments after her release, Bowie's striking eyes were visible from the high tree tops "shining even brighter than ever before with a glimmer of hope for the future ahead of her."

Good luck out there koala gal -- be chill and free.
