Fans of Brazil's top football club Chapecoense are flooding the team's Facebook page with tributes and prayers for the players who died in a plane crash that killed at least 70 people in Cerro Gordo, Colombia.

The plane, which was carrying 81 people including 22 players from the team, lost contact with ground controllers around midnight and reportedly attempted a forced landing.

Chapecoense was due to play in the final of the Copa Sudamericana, against Medellin team Atletico Nacional.

Colombia's civil aviation agency says at least three Chapecoence players, two plane crew members and one journalist survived Monday's crash near the city of Medellin.

At least 70 people have been confirmed dead.

A video on Chapecoense's Facebook page shows the players getting ready for the flight in Sao Paulo's Garulhos international airport.

Fans of the team are posting prayers and tributes to the players: .“I am from Rio de Janeiro and I am praying for you. May God and Our Lady send their angels to take care of you all."

Other Brazilian football teams are paying tributes on Twitter. Flamengo tweeted:

“Strength @ChapecoenseReal! United in one heart! Flamengo and the nation are together with you!”

Barranquilla’s Junior also tweeted support:
