LONDON -- The debate over whether Britain should exit the European Union has reached a whole new, ridiculous level.

On Wednesday morning, independent campaign group Fishing for Leave organised a fleet of boats to sail down the Thames.

The idea sounded simple enough, and to start with it was -- but then things escalated.

The flotilla looked undeniably epic as they started out.

At some point along the way, they were joined by UKIP leader (and lead figure of the "Leave" campaign) Nigel Farage.

As they approached central London, it felt like the start of some weird battle.

Then, all of a sudden, it was. Irish singer-songwriter Bob Geldof appeared on his own boat to clash with Farage's campaigners in the middle of the river.

He came armed with a megaphone.

After that, everything went a bit crazy.

At the time of writing, the battle continues to rage on.

Who knows when the madness will end.
