LONDON -- The Collins Dictionary has released its top 10 words for the year for 2016.

And the full list is pretty hilarious because, you know, 2016.

But the word that beat gems like JOMO and Trumpism to come out on top?

Brexit.

Defined by Collins as, "The withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union," the dictionary cited Brexit as THE word of 2016 because of its unprecedented proliferation in the months leading up to the EU referendum and in its aftermath.

Although the dictionary reports the first recorded use of Brexit to have occurred in 2013, over the past year usage has increased by an astounding 3,400%.

In a Guardian article Collins’s head of language content Helen Newstead is quoted as saying, “‘Brexit’ is arguably politics’s most important contribution to the English language in over 40 years, since the Watergate scandal gave commentators and comedians the suffix ‘-gate’ to make any incident or scandal infinitely more compelling.”

Brexit's adaptability into other phrases (read: Bremain, BrexPitt) further contributes to its place at the top:

Second on the list is the decidedly less politically charged word "Hygge," a term originating from Denmark that means "creating cosy and convivial atmospheres that promote wellbeing."

Let's bump hygge up to the number one spot in 2017, plz.
