BuzzFeed confirmed on its debate liveblog that the tweet had been published by Peretti.
Peretti backed up the story to a BuzzFeed reporter, claiming that he heard Ivanka Trump say the words about eight to 10 years ago at a bar in New York City.
Peretti's wife is also told BuzzFeed that she heard the quote.
BuzzFeed declined to make Peretti available for an interview or to comment further on the situation.
