Cadillac's first electric SUV will arrive early for just under $60,000

Cadillac's Lyriq electric SUV will arrive sooner than expected after initial pandemic-related delays, the company announced Wednesday, along with pricing and new photos of the EV.

The first electric Cadillac will be available in 2022 with production starting in the first part of the year. Reservations will open in September 2021 with the car priced at $59,990 to start. It looks like Cadillac is pricing it to go against the Tesla Model Y. That electric SUV starts at just over $50,000 with a 326-mile range.

When the Lyriq was first introduced last year, Cadillac anticipated production starting at the end of 2022. Now Cadillac's 300-mile range, five-seater luxury EV will be here sooner as GM ramps up its electric vehicle production. The car will be made at GM's Spring Hill, Tennessee factory, which is undergoing a transition to be a plant for EVs.

A single electric motor and 12-module 100kWh Ultium battery power the vehicle, which will have fast charging. Cadillac expects 10 minutes of charge time will add 76 miles to the battery.

Cadillac is offering two color options for the Lyriq: satin steel metallic or stellar black metallic. The car has a distinct black crystal grille and all the lighting around it features choreography that one Cadillac representative described as "digital rain" as the car lights up.

Inside, the seats can be sky cool gray or noir (black). There's also a curved 33-inch LED screen and GM's Super Cruise hands-free driving system (for certain highways throughout the U.S. and Canada) built into the steering wheel.

With September still a long ways off before reservations start, look for a new Lyriq TV ad dropping during the Oscars award show on ABC Sunday evening.
