New cafe turns depressing salads into beautiful little cakes
Don't kid yourself -- salad will never, ever be as good as cake.
Still, The Vegiedeco Cafe opening in Nagyoa, Japan, hopes to radically transform the lunch experience by making salad and vegetables look and taste like the dessert.
Earlier last year, Japanese food stylist Mitsuki Moriyasu developed the concept of the Vegiedeco Salad (Vegetable Decoration Salad), a strange and beautiful salad-cake hybrid, and the idea quickly took off. Now, a new cafe will be selling these 'Vegiedecos.'

In lieu of traditional icing the cakes are made with tofu or cream cheese, then blended with vegetables to make them look like frosting. The effect is strangely frosting-like, but be forewarned: this is very, very healthy for you.
Cakes start around 735 yen (US$6.50), and include koyi, a fermented sake starter mold with a wide variety of health benefits. Customers can also add a slice of gluten-free bread to their meal or Vegie Drop Tea, loaded with veggie photochemicals.
The painfully healthy cafe is set to open April 5, and feature a number of superfoods, including low-carbohydrate ingredients and gluten-free items. Little to no sugar has been added to each dish. How beautiful. How depressing.
However you feel about salads (mostly sad things, in our case) this restaurant hopes to revolutionize the "random vegetables in a bowl" experience. Check them out for yourself, and make sure to grab a napkin to catch your drool.
