Steve Rogers has long been Marvel's bastion for goodness. Sure, he's a soldier who has had to do tough things in times of war, but he's always fought on the side of the underdog and for American ideals of democracy and individual freedoms. Until now.

Marvel has just announced that the new Captain America comic series, which will return Steve Rogers to his mantle after having seen his friend Sam Wilson hold the shield the past few years, is bringing a new twist to the venerable hero. Written by Nick Spencer with art by Jesus Saiz, this series will reveal that Steve Rogers is actually an agent of the villainous terrorist group Hydra.

In their release Marvel wrote: "This seemingly standard Captain America title will reveal that Steve Rogers will be, and always has been, a member of Hydra and will now be presented as the most covert undercover operative of the Marvel Universe who is trying to take it down from within."

The first issue in the new ongoing series, out today, puts Steve on a new team with new, and returning, allies. While much of the setup feels familiar, it's the final image that will leave long-time Cap fans confused and hungry for more. What does this latest twist mean for the future of the Star-Spangled Man with a Plan? Only time will tell.
