The 8 most WTF releases we've seen at CES — so far

Seriously, WTF?

While much of the first day of CES 2017 was focused on tech that will improve the ways we all see the world, day two gave us a better look into some of the new innovations and gadgets that will soon fill it going forward.

After taking many of the announcements from day two into account, we have one reaction: WTF?

From major releases courtesy of the biggest companies at the show to smaller products that popped up in between, it was a day that left us scratching our heads, for better or worse. Here are eight of the biggest WTFs we saw.

1. The 29-inch touchscreen and Alexa on LG’s Smart InstaView fridge

That LG rolled out a smart refrigerator isn't a big shocker — after all, the connected home is a big theme of the show, and the company announced its entire line of home appliances will now have Wi-Fi integration.

It's the built-in, fully fledged Amazon Alexa capabilities and 29-inch touchscreen that got us. We would ask LG why, but we're pretty sure the answer will just be "why not?"

2. LG’s paper-thin new OLED TV W

This WTF is more of the "amazed" variety. TVs have been getting thinner and thinner, sure — but a 4K screen that's skinnier than an iPhone?

It was ridiculous enough when day one showed showed Samsung's QLED sets mounted almost perfectly flush with a wall. Now we'll be able to have 4K resolution mounted on magnets as wallpaper? That's just crazy.

3. The fart-controlling digestive tracker

The AIRE is a breathalyzer-esque device that can track the amount of gas a person has in their system. Huh?

Immediate reaction: WTF? Second reaction: maybe this is something to get for myself my dad.

4. The boozy food processor

The Alchema gives its users a simple solution for home fermentation. Instead of wasting fruit by throwing it away when it goes bad, the countertop device and companion app looks to encourage a boozy second life for it.

It elicits a slightly different version of a WTF reaction. Instead of What-TF is this, we're thinking more along the lines of Why-TF wasn't this already a thing.

5. LG’s transparent TV display

Crowned as one of the coolest things we've seen at CES so far, LG's transparent TV display prototype definitely puts the "Wow" in WTF.

The 55-inch mock-up was short on specs — but that didn't really matter. We were too busy thinking of the tech's potential applications in things like heads-up displays (and waving our arms behind it like fools) to care.

6. The unfortunate future of fishing

There's an old saying about something being far too easy: "like fishing with dynamite." If the PowerRay catches on, we'll have to change that to "like fishing with an overcomplicated underwater drone and VR glasses system."

CES is a place for all kinds of innovation, after all — but that doesn't quite roll off the tongue as nicely. Let's hope this sinks before it swims.

7. Toyota’s very nosy (but awesome-looking) concept car

To be fair, most concept cars are chock-full of WTF features — but Toyota's Concept-i UX has a doozy: it might just keep track of its drivers' emotions while they're on the road. Prying into our business, much?

8. HTC Vive’s everything-can-be-a-controller tracker

It's an unfortunate truth: most of the time you're wearing a VR headset and interacting with the world inside of it, you look a bit silly to anyone watching you IRL. They at least probably know what you're doing if you use standard controllers, though — which the new HTC Vive Tracker device toss by the wayside.

The Vive Tracker can replicate just about any object it's attached to in the VR world — anything. So are you fighting a virtual fire? Clip the Tracker on a hose. That's sure to make anyone watching your virtual exploits from the real world wonder, "WTF?"
