The Changzhou police said via its Weibo account that two people in a minibus which crashed were pronounced dead at the scene, while the third victim died later.

Based on reports, it took roughly five hours or so for authorities to clear a lane to let the rest of the traffic pass.

The police added that preliminary investigations have shown that the collisions were due to rainy weather causing low visibility and slippery roads.

Saturday was the start of the three-day Qingming festival national holiday for China, where people travel across the nation to pay respects to their ancestors at grave sites.
