There are two computing headset camps right now: virtual reality headsets like the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive and augmented reality headsets like Microsoft's HoloLens.

At Microsoft's Windows 10 event on Wednesday, the company announced a handful of new hardware partners that will be producing affordable "mixed reality" headsets that support virtual reality and augmented reality, starting at $299.

Partners already signed up to build the VR/AR headsets include HP, Dell, Lenovo, Acer and Asus.

The headsets will connect with PCs running the upcoming Windows 10 Creators Update. The headsets, like Windows 10 Creators Update, will be available in 2017.

Microsoft says these new mixed reality headsets will help accelerate both VR and AR.
