Chelsea, Chelsea Handler's weekly talk show, will not be returning for a third season on Netflix, the comedian has announced with a statement on Twitter.

Handler said the presidential election and the dramatic events that followed "galvanized" her and persuaded her to scrap the show in favour of a renewed political activism.

"From the national level down to the grassroots, it's clear our decisions at the ballot box next year will mark a defining moment for our nation," she wrote in the post.

"For those reasons, I've decided not to return for another season of Chelsea and instead devote as much time as I can to becoming a more knowledgeable and engaged citizen and to focus on projects that have significance to me."

"My goal is to be better informed, raise my voice, and participate in a more meaningful way."

Handler said she's planning to travel the country and visit areas and people she doesn't know about to get a better understanding of the U.S. political divide.

She'll also continue her partnership with Netflix, working on a documentary "where I'll engage with people I don't talk with enough -- people of different ethnicities, religions and political philosophies."

The first season of Chelsea consisted of half-hour episodes released three times a week.

Following the U.S. elections, Handler opted for more in-depth, hour-long episodes which gave her "the opportunity to dig deeper into the subjects that matter to Chelsea most. She will travel to India, Europe, Washington, D.C., Montana and more," Netflix said.

While it's hard to know how popular Chelsea is as Netflix doesn't disclose its ratings, the show received mixed reviews.

Fans of the comedian on social media were sad but supportive of the new enterprise:
