The welcome wagon that met Cheng Youze when he was released from Jincheng prison in Shanxi, China on May 23 was like a scene out of a Hong Kong blockbuster movie.

According to Chinese news reports, Cheng, who served a three-year sentence for illegal gambling operations, swaggered out of jail where more than 100 members from his gang turned up to celebrate his freedom in Hummers, Land Rovers and Mercedes-Benz cars.

On top of the huge turnout, the members also set off firecrackers as part of the dramatic celebrations. All these took place right outside of the prison facility under the watchful eyes of the local authorities.

After the grand affair, Cheng and his men adjourned to a five-star hotel to feast on a banquet for 100 tables.

But Cheng was not to enjoy his newfound freedom for long. It seems that the Jincheng police are serious about cracking down on local gangs, and weren't at all impressed by Cheng's flagrant attempts to rub his mob relations in their faces.

Three days after his release, Cheng and nine of his gang members were hauled backed to prison for charges on public disturbance. The case is currently under investigation where the police have said that they would not tolerate criminals' rampant arrogance.

Cheng is no stranger to prison, his criminal record dates back to 1984 for robbery and mob charges.

A video of the release party made its way onto Weibo a day after Cheng's arrest, but was quickly taken off without explanation.
