This is one beautiful love story that will give us all -- even the cynics -- hope.

The story between 57-year-old Chinese expat, Yao Nanshan, and Liu Lijian is currently making waves on the Internet for its fairytale ending.

Yao, who was living in Spain up till October last year, gave up his wealth and assets in Europe to move to a rural village in Zhejiang, China, and spend the rest of his life with his true love, Liu.

According to Xinhua, the loved-up duo met in 2013 during one of Yao's research trips to Yunhe county. On a night that he and his colleague found themselves stranded in the village, he knocked on Liu's door and asked to stay for a night.

Liu, who works as a farmer, took the strangers under her wing and put them up for free. Yao and Liu got to talking, and the former said he was touched by how strong Liu was despite being a widow struggling to support her daughter who's been diagnosed with a rare blood disease.

The courtship began when Yao returned to Liu's village a month after meeting to confess his love for her. Although Liu could easily have been her ticket out of her hardship, she rejected Yao, not wanting to burden him with her problems.

Refusing to take no for an answer, Yao then returned to Spain and signed over all his assets and businesses to his children, and returned to Zhejiang to prove his sincerity. Moved by his gestures, Liu accepted Yao and married him on Christmas Day.

Initially skeptical of their father's actions, Yao's children have since traveled to China to visit the couple and were supportive of their father's decision after seeing how happy he is.

Yao and Liu are now running a small inn, which the former built in her hometown to make ends meet.
