Google Chrome on OS X is getting rid of its extraneous in-house push notifications in favor of integrating into Apple’s Notification Center, The Next Web noticed on Wednesday.

Chrome notifications will soon appear just like other notifications in OS X. This means that you'll be able to manage Chrome's notification settings in the Notification Center just like every other app instead of needing to navigate through Chrome's settings. When you have your Mac set to “do not disturb,” Chrome notifications will comply and no longer pop up.

Chrome's browser notifications have been around since before OS X introduced native push notifications, but it has taken years for Google to make the move to native notifications.

Chromium engineers announced the new feature in a comment thread about Chrome’s notifications that started back in 2013, where users noted the uselessness of the notifications on OS X with the introduction of Apple’s native notifications.

The move to native notifications is still in beta

The move to native notifications is still in beta, but it will likely be coming to all Chrome users soon. If you’re eager to make the switch you can go to chrome://flags/#enable-native-notifications and click the enable link, then restart Chrome. Be careful though, being in beta means the feature isn’t quite stable and could crash your browser.

Google recently removed another underused and ultimately useless feature from Chrome -- the app launcher, which allowed users to launch Chrome apps without opening the browser.

This notifications move could be coming to the Windows version of Chrome too, as Windows has its own native notification system as well.
