Thinking of rolling to the cinema in your PJs or unicorn onesie? One cinema won't let you in.

A New Zealand cinema has banned pyjamas and onesies, championing their aim to improve the dress standards in the surrounding town.

Reported by Newshub, local movie theatre Hawera Cinemas took to Facebook on Friday to post their dress code, which bans "pyjamas, onesies, dressing gowns or dirty gumboots — no matter how cute they are!"

"Like many other businesses and people in town we have noticed an increasing trend of people thinking pj's/onesies and dressing gowns are appropriate to wear in public," wrote Hawera Cinema 2.

"It is not the vibe or environment we want to encourage here at Hawera Cinemas."

The ban has polarised residents, hundreds of whom posted their messages of support or criticism on the Facebook post.

Some were supportive of the PJ ban, and hoped the rest of the community spaces, like supermarkets, would follow suit. "Think all the shops in town should take your lead and share this post!! Well done," wrote one commenter.

But others called the cinema the "fashion police," and thought the ban unnecessary. "Im not a wearing pjs in public girl but I don’t see how others wearing pjs out affects anyone else so I cant see the reason for this rule," commented one person.

"I didnt spend $60 on a kitty cat onesie not to be able to wear it in town," wrote another.

Dress codes aren't usually an official policy at cinemas, more of an assumption. But really, I know it's super comfortable but is it that much to ask for folks to get, y'know, dressed?
