Dolores O'Riordan, lead singer of Irish rock band The Cranberries, died Monday. She was 46.

The band confirmed the news on their official Facebook page. There's no cause of death listed; the post only notes that O'Riordan died "suddenly" while she was in London for "a short recording session."

The Cranberries were a staple of the 1990s alt-rock music scene. Their 1993 debut, Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We?, delivered "Dreams" and "Linger," two of the era's most well-known tunes. They followed it up one year later with No Need to Argue, which featured "Zombie," another Cranberries classic.

Over time, the band had four Top 20 albums on the Billboard 200 charts and eight Top 20 Modern Rock singles, including "Ode to My Family," "Ridiculous Thoughts," "Salvation," "Free to Decide," and "Promises," as well as the three listed above.

More recently, the band re-formed in 2009 after a six-year hiatus with a series of globe-spanning tours. They released their sixth album, Roses, in 2012, and then Something Else, featuring new recordings of Cranberries hits backed by the Irish Chamber Orchestra, in April 2017.

O'Riordan also released a number of solo albums during the hiatus: Are You Listening, in 2007; and No Baggage, in 2009.

Public figures and fans alike immediately spoke up on social media to express their sorrow at O'Riordan's passing and share memories of the alt-rock icon and her band's hit music.
