'Supernatural' just masterfully paid off a storyline 8 seasons in the making
Wednesday's episode of Supernatural delivered on a storyline that's been several seasons in the making, but to fully understand the gravity of the event that occurred, a little context is required.
First, any fan of Supernatural no doubt ranks Season 3's "A Very Supernatural Christmas" among their favorite episodes, as it delivered heaps of backstory about the Winchester brothers, including the story behind Dean's amulet, which turned out to be a gift from pint-sized Sam that Dean treasured over the years.

In the seasons that followed, more was revealed about this symbol of the brother's bond, like the fact that it glows in the presence of God. Sounds important, right? It was -- until, of course, Dean deemed it moot in a particularly low moment in Season 5 and tossed it in the trash.
It's long been a question whether or not fans would get to see it again, and it finally happened.
The amulet reappeared in Wednesday's episode, which also saw the return of Chuck/God, who was in possession of the necklace this whole time.

He first flashed it at the top of the episode, joking to Metatron, "you'll never guess where this thing has been this entire time."
Much of the episode was dedicated to interactions between Metatron and Chuck/God as the latter sought some feedback on his autobiography. A battle of wits ensued with Metatron eventually calling his fellow bar patron a "coward" for not stopping his sister Amara's streak of terror.
Chuck didn't take this well.
But, it seems, this was just in the kick in the pants he needed.
The revelation that he needs to stop Amara came just as the Winchesters were fighting a major losing battle against Amara in a small town, where she'd unleashed a terrifying fog that was turning people into Black Veiny Horrors.
Sam and Dean had tried to barricade themselves and some townspeople in a police station, but their efforts failed as the fog crept in anyway. Sam even became infected and was suffocating. It was a classic Winchester Oh F---K moment.
Though, this time, Dean didn't even have a plan. Just as all hope was lost, he reached into his brother's pocket and discovered a glowing orb attached to a familiar string.
Relief washed over Dean's face, and in his eyes, it was as if a single event had just renewed his faith.
Suddenly people -- including Sam -- began healing and the fog disappeared.
As the boys walked outside, they saw Chuck standing there and the light still burning bright in Dean's hand.
"We should probably talk," he tells the brothers.
Supernatural is a show people often joke will go on forever. But with payoffs like this, that's a hard idea to argue with.
