Archived letters paint a picture of David Attenborough's childhood

LONDON -- A series of old letters written by David Attenborough's father have been released by the University of Leicester.

Frederick Attenborough's four letters, released by the university to coincide with his son's 90th birthday, reveal David Attenborough's early interest in the environment.

Frederick Attenborough worked at the University College, Leicester (which would later become the University of Leicester) as principal in the 1930s and 40s. His letters to fellow professors, societies and Army figures show a clear enthusiasm for his son's burgeoning geology career.

In this one, written to Captain Clifford Smith in 1944, Frederick even withholds consent for David to join the Home Guard.

Frederick was certainly one dedicated parent.

Before becoming a world-famous TV presenter, David Attenborough did indeed get his scholarship to study at Cambridge -- he went there in 1945.

Seven years later, he was working in his first full-time job at the BBC.
