Hundreds of thousands of fish became trapped close to the shore in New Jersey and died due to a lack of oxygen, the BBC reports.

The fish, which are known as peanut bunker fish, were trapped in the creek by bigger fish in Raritan Bay and have completely surrounded some of the boats moored there.

They died from suffocation thanks to low oxygen levels due partly to the warmth of the water, according to the New York and New Jersey Baykeeper organization.

The sheer number of dead fish along with the August heat has cast a strong stench over marina, with locals describing it as "enough to gag you."

Local news station CBS New York flew over the marina for a Facebook Live video and revealed the scale of the problem.

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection has said they don't know how long the clean-up will take.
