'Doctor Who' companion Deborah Watling dies

'Doctor Who' companion Deborah Watling dies

British actress Deborah Watling has died, the BBC reports. Watling played Victoria Waterfield, companion to Patrick Troughton as the second doctor, on Doctor Who. She was 69 and suffered briefly from brain cancer.

Watling was born in 1948 and first appeared on screen in 1959 on William Tell. She was on Doctor Who from 1967 to 1968, even appearing alongside father Jack Watling twice during her tenure as companion, per the BBC. She was also part of Doctor Who: Dimensions in Time (1993), Downtime (1995), and played herself in The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot (2013).

After Doctor Who, she did a lot of theater, including A Bequest to the Nation, Not in Front of the Parents, and The Wizard of Oz, per her website, and kept up a steady stream of television and stage appearances through for the rest of her career.

She married Steve Turner in 1993 and her brother Giles Watling serves in the British parliament.
