The summer of breakups has claimed another victim.

Demi Lovato and Wilmer Valderrama announced in a very mature Instagram post that they are ending their six-year relationship, because they are "better as best friends."

"This was an incredibly difficult decision for both of us," the stars penned in a joint statement. "We will always be supportive of one another."

The breakup comes as a shock to fans who have followed the couple's public relationship for years, as each of them have even spoken about marrying the other (as recently as February). And just two moths ago at the GLADD Awards, Lovato thanked Valderrama, saying, "I am so proud to be his girlfriend."

This also comes on the heels of the startling breakup between Taylor Swift and Calvin Harris and the less-surprising but still painful alleged split of Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik. And who can forget 2015's heartbreaking summer of un-love?

Guess celebs just want to be cool for the summer...
