Denver International Airport joined in on the April Fools' Day "fun" on Friday, posting on Facebook that the airport was holding a vote to repaint its infamous horse statue .

"He's big, he's iconic, he's very Colorado, and he sparks great conversations about public art," the airport posted. "But he is not, as some have taken to calling him, 'Blucifer.'"

To counter the less than complimentary nickname, the airport offered new color choices, including paint samples of "Morning Sunshine," "Soft Chinchilla" and "Elephant Pink."

The airport confirmed to Mashable that the paint job vote is just a ruse.

However, commenters were quick to chime in that they are not fans of the statue.

"I wish this wasn't an April Fools joke, because this horse really is creepy looking," a commenter wrote. "It's not the blue color that's given him the 'Blucifer' nickname — it's his glowing red demonic looking eyes!"

"It's not the blue color that's given him the 'Blucifer' nickname — it's his glowing red demonic looking eyes!"

The 32-foot-tall horse was installed on airport property in April 2008, quickly attracting the nickname "Blucifer" — that's "blue" and "Lucifer," to be clear — for its unnatural color, glowing red eyes, and because it killed its creator.

A section of Blue Mustang's 9,000 pound fiberglass body crushed sculptor Luis Jiménez in 2006.

Several commenters either didn't want the post to be a joke, or may not have realized it was.

"I hope this is true because I'm one of the people who call him 'Blucifer,'" wrote a commenter. "It honestly has nothing to do with his color but those demonic looking red eyes and the fact it killed the artist."

"Hey guys, you might need to fix the eyes too," another person wrote. "That's why I call him the devil horse ... the eyes freak me out."

At the end of the day, though, you can't pander to the haters.

"Keep it blue," wrote another commenter. "It's the red eyes that make it look that way. Either way there will always be negative people. They won't be happy no matter what you do."

Happy April, fools. Blucifer is here to stay.
