Betsy DeVos' Department of Education misspells W.E.B. Du Bois' name, then misspells its apology

Welcome to "alternative spelling."

"Education must not simply teach work — it must teach life."

These words by civil rights activist and historian W.E.B. Du Bois were echoed by the U.S. Department of Education's Twitter account, but ironically, with a spelling error.

The account attributed the words to W.E.B. "DeBois." Of course, people on Twitter noticed right away and were not afraid to bring out the red pens and correct the "alternative spelling."

Later, the account apologized for the error -- but, sadly, it botched that too.

The NAACP came with another quote and some clapping hands.

Some blamed Betsy DeVos, the controversial new secretary of education whose lack of experience in public schools have sparked protests.

Others simply added this to the list of Black History Month fails from the government this year.

And of course, #DeptofEdTypos began rolling in shortly after the error.

The Department of Education tweeted an apology hours after the original tweet — but even that had a spelling error.

Du Bois, not DeBois. Apologies, not apologizes.

Maybe use spell-check next time, @usedgov?
