I've heard incredible things about Devialet's Phantom wireless speaker, but I was not prepared to experience the even more powerful Phantom Gold.

The 25-pound speaker that's made in France looks like an alien egg and the rose gold trims are real 22-carat plated rose gold, which means the finish looks more copper than pink. Sorry Apple, but this is what real rose gold looks like.

Though the Phantom Gold is a high-fidelity speaker, the company's not targeting audiophiles specifically. Rather, the French startup set out to create a speaker with unmatched sound quality for the masses.

In other words, the Phantom and Phantom Gold are aimed at consumers. A single Devialet Phantom speaker can replace an entire room's worth of surround sound audio gear.

I was skeptical at first, but when I heard it in our studio, it literally blew me away:

The Phantom Gold is eight times more powerful than the Phantom with 4,500 watts and 108 decibels of power. It has a tweeter made from titanium capable of frequencies up to 27kHz.

The speaker connects to devices wirelessly via Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, AirPlay and Spotify Connect. It also takes wired connections through Ethernet or optical cable.

Devialet promises unparalleled sound quality with zero distortion at high volume levels and from my first listen, the Phantom Gold holds up to the claim.

To get the best audio quality, we streamed a variety of different songs through Tidal and well, it was most impressive. Even at 100 percent volume, there was no audible distortion.

Just look at this compact monster go:

Trying out the Phantom Gold in the studio at work is one thing, but I'll have to do so in my own home before I can make any judgments. But so far I'm impressed.

The Phantom Gold is available for pre-order from the company's website for $2,990 with the first units shipping out in early August.
