Mix it up this Halloween with a pineapple jack-o'-lantern

Move over pumpkins, there's a new hollowed out rotting fruit in town.

While carving pumpkins into jack-o'-lanterns is a Halloween tradition, maybe it's time to switch things up a little bit. Pumpkins are kind of a pain to deal with, they're expensive, and let's face it -- carving a pumpkins is just wasteful. Sure you get some seeds out of it, but does anyone actually enjoy roasted pumpkin seeds.

Thankfully, a pumpkin replacement is here to add a more tropical feel to Halloween: the pineapple.

While the pineapple jack-o'-lantern has its limitations, the benefits of saving money in addition to having a load of fresh pineapple for your spooky piña colada outweigh any negatives.

Given the size difference, as well as the rough texture of a pineapple's outer shell, you're a little more limited in which designs you can carve into your pineapple.

To make your own pineapple jack-o'-lantern, cut off the top of the pineapple as normal, and remove the inside using a pineapple corer or go it with a knife if you don't have one. Just be careful to not injure yourself or break the outer shell of the pineapple in the process.

Next, design your pineapple like you would a pumpkin, pop a candle inside and display your new creation for all to see.

Unfortunately, a pineapple won't last as long as a pumpkin, but it's perfect for a spooky Halloween party, especially if you live near the beach.
