Brace yourselves: this one is equal parts heartwarming and heartbreaking.

On Monday, a photograph of a memorial an owner had left at the beach for their dog went viral on Reddit.

"In loving memory of Charlie," reads the sign. It contains a smiley photo of a golden retriever and some instructions for the contents of the wooden box it's attached to, which contains a number of tennis balls.

It's that last line that really does it: "Remember to live each moment just like your dog, with unconditional love, loyalty and happiness."

Looks like those tennis balls have been getting a fair bit of use, too.
