A family dog sacrificed its life in order to save its family from four deadly mountain cobras in India.

According to the Deccan Chronicle, the cobras attempted to enter the home of Dibakar Raita in the village of Sebekapur in Gajapati, India. Fortunately for Raita and his family of eight, their Doberman pinscher was there to defend the home.

“I’m shocked," Raita told the Deccan Chronicle. "He has made the supreme sacrifice for me and my family. I will remember him till our death. I pray [to] God, may his soul rest in peace.”

The dog reportedly fought off the snakes "for hours," but ultimately died from multiple snake bites a short while later.

However, the dog's deed did not go unnoticed. According to the report, hundreds of people from nearby villages rushed to the scene with floral wreaths, which were laid over the dog's body in order to pay their respects.

Unfortunately, the mountain cobra is not an uncommon sight in this region. India Times explains that these snakes often come out seeking higher and dryer ground when their nests are flooded during monsoon season.

Of course, this isn't the first canine to defend its family from a deadly snake. In May, a German shepherd named Haus was dubbed a hero after protecting two young girls and their grandmother from a rattlesnake. Fortunately, Haus was able to recover from his wounds.
